Picking Blueberries
In August our class traveled up the Andreafski River to pick blueberries for our class projects. We stopped a few miles up the river and picked berries for about an hour. Each student picked as much as they could, gathering berries in Ziploc bags.
Weighing Berries & Creating Graphs
Once we returned, each student weighed their berries to the nearest ounce, as the class recorded the data. Each student used this data to create a bar graph. Within Word, students learned to insert a chart or graph, enter the data in Excel, insert a graph title, add the x and y-axis titles, and customize the backgrounds and fonts to their preferences. Within Word the class also learned to change the page orientation, insert text boxes, and center text.
Making Akutaq
The class picked a total of one-gallon of blueberries. We discussed the different parts of a recipe, then wrote a recipe for akutaq (a-goo-tuk or Eskimo ice-cream) all together. Students recorded the recipe in their journals and later typed them in Word. As they typed they learned to right justify text, center text, format a bulleted list, and format a numbered list.
We boiled one fresh white fish, and cleaned out the bones. With the class split in two groups, we made akutaq, giving everyone a turn to whip the mixture. After all that hard work, each child enjoyed the delicious akutaq (this was their favorite part!) and got to take a taste home to parents and grandparents.
